The benefits and beauty of cultural diversity is something that I was raised with. My family was a member of a group that provides house stays for international visitors coming to the universities in the area. As a child I had the pleasure of living with people from France, India, Russia, Germany, Bavaria, Pakistan, Senegal, and Niue island. This influenced me such that when I went to college I chose to live in the international dorm. I have lived and worked in Nepal, Taiwan, China, Israel, and Wales. I know, from what I have observed, that humanity is one whole, we all have more similarities than differences, and it serves all of us best to work toward understanding and supporting each other.
As a Peace Corps Volunteer in Nepal, I worked with local non-government organizations in developing a survey to collect community data, then taught the volunteers how to analyze and present the data for inclusion in grant proposals. They won the grant money for which they were aiming from the proposal with the survey results. It was a great achievement for us all.
I taught middle and high school math and computers, in a 24/7 boarding school in China for a year. Being a 24/7 school for both students and teachers, the teachers lived in the dorm area and were involved in many aspects of the students’ lives beyond school. Just before this job, I was in Taiwan as a member of a team that held teacher trainings aimed at bringing environmental education into the classroom.
I accept students and people for who they are. I do not neatly fit in any mold that society has defined, so i do not expect it of others. I strive to provide an environment where all students feel safe, regardless of race, socioeconomic status, gender, preferred pronouns, or orientation.
There are some differences that become challenges for people. I am a mother of a special needs child. I have learned to work with people who struggle with many aspects of school. I have worked directly with support services as a student, parent, and educator. As an online tutor for adults, I have had students who are legally blind, autistic, attention deficit, bipolar, and suffering from narcolepsy. Through these experiences, I have learned to adapt my teaching methods to accommodate the needs of my students.
No, I am very sorry. While I have been introduced to many cultures throughout my life I have failed to become fluent in any other language. I will, however, be very patient if the student is learning English, and I hope that they are patient with me. I welcome students from all backgrounds.
I have tutored beginning programming for 6-year-olds and 80-year-olds, and complex programming topics for many people who fall inbetween. I tutor anyone of any age, although for younger kids I will work with the parents to make sure the curriculum and learning goals are realistic for their age.
